just wondering, does anybody besides me & anthony still read this?
Joshua
Roc: I just saw a trailer for Push. You & Pierce were in that when it filmed a few years ago, right?
Joshua
I just drove through the Great Swamp. It was gorgeous. Anybody else do this recently? I barely remember how to get around here, which is weird considering how much I used to drive there in high school.
Joshua
Happy birthday (in your time zone not mine), Anthony!

anthony: I have a quick technical question. I noted earlier that my 3.5-year old laptop is getting much slower at menial tasks. How much of this might be due to age, and how much to the fact that in the last three years I've never wiped it clean and rebuilt the system (winXP pro sp2)? about a year or so ago, the task manager dialogue stopped rendering correctly (i.e. no title bar, but the frame still appears & is functional), so I'm thinking most of the effect might be attributable to broken software creeping about in my os. thoughts?

Man oh man. I just watched the Palin-Couric interview, and it was even funnier than Tina Fey's parody! Does anybody know if this is available on DVD?

I'm a little nervous about California state ballot props. Right now it looks like prop 8 (constitutional gay marriage ban) is pretty sure to pass with (53% in favor with 26% of precincts reporting). prop 4 (constitutional abortion ban for minors without parental or spousal consent, yes, you read that right; minors would still be able to have abortions if their SPOUSES consent, and only after 72 hours' notification), is pretty evenly balanced.

why are these even appropriate to put in a constitution? this is a perversion of law.

Joshua
I just realized that Joni Mitchell sounds a lot different if you're actually in California.
Joshua
friends on bikes: what are your opinions about panniers vs. milk crates? I'm eager to stop carrying my books on my back!
Joshua
I just had a 1.5hr meeting with a professor to discuss potential rotation projects, UCSF "boot camp" begins tomorrow, and classes start next week. I don't know if I'm ready to be a student again! I just want to learn how to ride my bike
Joshua
I've almost completely unpacked, and am exhausted; left to do is the box of dishes, and some old furniture that I need to give away. Then I just need to hang some pictures and find a place for my suitcases. and hang a door. anybody have an extra 34x80x1.75" door hanging around? anybody know how to hang one?

I just bought a bike! that whole remembering thing is bullshit.

Moving tomorrow! My apartment is almost empty.

I went mushroom hunting today and had some great finds: two more chanterelle patches, a +porcini+ patch, and some stray bicolor boletes. The highlight was being stopped by an old Russian couple on a park bench who, becoming really excited, asked me if they could smell my mushrooms and if there were more nearby. Then they asked me, "you know how to cook this? you make stew? you born in America?"

it was really exciting

I'm packing, packing, packing. The movers are coming August 15, and I'm leaving on the 20th.

I think this is the first one-way ticket I've bought!

Joshua
I'm really broken up right now. My friends just threw me a going away party, and I'm at at loss of words for my gratitude, worries,, joy, regret, and sentiments. I think this is the hardest move I've made.

Today was my last day at Microbia, the ~40 person biotech where I've worked for almost three years. To those of you who don't know, the place was awesome enough that I actually enjoyed getting up in the morning to go, and quite a few of my friends in this city are people I worked with there. It doesn't quite seem real to me that I'm not going there Monday; still less real is the fact that I'm moving to San Francisco in three weeks.
Joshua
I'm obsessively checking my email to see if anybody has written me back about apartments (specifically, the one I really like)
Joshua
I have found a place to live, cozily nestled between the Mission and the Castro, at the intersection of 17th & Dolores. The place is small, but the location fantastic.

I do have some reservations in not having met the third roommate (and also in that the one I did meet seems a little neurotic, perhaps), but, in the worst case, I can always move out.

All in all, I am happy to have found something in my price range in one of my desired neighborhoods.
