it's not immediate, but you'll get back to a significant percentage of where you were at when you last rode quickly. when i first got my bike in london, i hadn't ridden in five or six years, and it took a day or two to get it back (and after picking up the bike i had to ride home across london).

right now I'm trying to get a handle on the gearing. I've never had a 27-speed before, and the shifters (Shimano NexAves), are a little new to me, too.

I am excited, though, and the good news is that there are bike shops on every other block in this city, so if I get stuck somewhere there'll be people to help out

i was wobbly for a few days but i got over it quickly. i also had trouble with the gears. i had only had a three speed before and i managed to get the chain off the gears in about 10 minutes.

my most common problem is that my two bikes have the brakes opposite each other (ah, europeans). it causes occasional unsteadiness when i cram on my front brake a lot harder then i mean to.

Yeah, I still can't ride one. I used to be able to, but I don't know what happened. Whatever, I can ride the stationary bike okay...

I think I just need to practice to get used to the technical stuff. Fortunately, my commute to work is 3 miles at a shallow decline the whole way. Unfortunately, the ride back is at a shallow incline, alas, the whole way. with lots of stop signs

well, if you were to be able to pick, that's the way to do it. better to get sweaty on the way home than the way in.

I guess. I biked to Dolores Park today (25% of the way to school) really quickly. I got back really slowly, but I don't what gear/chain wheel combo to use on the hills here. Knowing that I don't know that, however, is an improvement to this morning, when I wasn't really aware that that would matter.

there's essentially two schools of thought on that. you can either put it in a relatively high gear and basically stand on your pedals, letting your weight do most of the work and sorta pulling against your handlebars for extra "umpf", or you can stick it in a really low gear and sit and spin really fast. i assume you didn't get suspension on your bike, but if you do, that eats some of the force from the first option, making it less desirable (especially dual (front and back) suspension). the second option works pretty much the same on any bike, but takes more practice (and, taken to an extreme, makes you look like a cartoon character, legs a-spinin' but hardly in motion). either way, you'll probably want something close to the edges of your gearset, but the specifics vary with bike (gear rations vary) and body (of rider).

I tried #1 yesterday, and couldn't get the bike to turn. I think I had it in too hard a gear, and my weight wasn't enough to get up the hillside; today I'm trying option #2 which I think might work better given all of the stop signs in this city, since the first pedal turn is the hardest, and, in case of plan #1, really really hard. I also don't mind being too cartoonish, but I wish you & Emma were closer so we could go out together for some training.
